Mental hospital records 280 typhoid cases

MANILA, Philippines — Nearly 300 typhoid cases have been recorded at the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) in Mandaluyong, according to the Department of Health.
The DOH said 280 typhoid cases had been logged at the NCMH as of June 16.
Of the number, 216 patients have recovered from typhoid fever, DOH spokesman Albert Domingo said.
Typhoid is caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi.
The DOH said 12 patients are still receiving treatment and being monitored by the NCMH staff.
“Because of the mental state of those being treated, they need to be properly guided and reminded of basic hygiene practices such as handwashing,” Domingo said.
Typhoid fever spreads through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include high fever, abdominal pain and headache.
The DOH warned the public that if not treated properly or not given immediate medical attention, typhoid could be life threatening.
