Cebu diocese helps quake victims

MANILA, Philippines — Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy has directed all parishes in the province to initiate a second collection during masses today, to help victims of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Sarangani and other parts of Mindanao.
In a circular, Uy said the calamity has left many families grieving for the loss of their loved ones, homes and sources of livelihood.
“As members of one Church and one family in Christ, we cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of our brothers and sisters who now face the difficult task of rebuilding their lives and communities,” Uy said.
He said the plight of the people of Mindanao reminds Cebuanos of their own experience when a strong temblor struck the northern part of the province on Sept. 30, 2025.
“We were consoled by the prayers, solidarity, and financial assistance extended to us by many archdioceses and dioceses throughout the country. The generosity of our fellow Filipinos became a tangible sign of God’s providence and the communion that binds us together as one,” Uy said.
He said that although many churches, institutions and families in northern Cebu have yet to recover from the effects of last year’s disaster, the present circumstances should not diminish one’s capacity to share.
