PAGASA: Rainy season is here

MANILA, Philippines — The rainy season has begun, the state weather bureau said yesterday.
Occasional to frequent rains associated with the southwest monsoon have been observed over the past five days, said John Manalo, weather specialist at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Manalo said the rainy season will be felt more in the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.
Periods of reduced rainfall, more commonly known as monsoon breaks, may occur and last for several days or weeks.
With the looming El Niño, PAGASA said enhanced monsoon rainfall over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas is highly likely during the season.
Meanwhile, the low-pressure area being monitored outside of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) now has a “high” chance of forming into a tropical cyclone.
Located west of Calayan, Cagayan, it is expected to enter PAR today.
Should it enter PAR, it will be named Esther, the fifth tropical cyclone this year.
