Substandard steel bars kumakalat sa merkado

MANILA, Philippines — Nagsanib-pwersa ang Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI) at Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) para suyurin ang mga hardware stores na nagbebenta ng substandard steel bars na ginagamit sa rebar o pampatibay ng mga itinatayong gusali at iba pang imprastraktura.

Ito’y matapos matuklasang may panibagong batch ng rebars ang nagkalat mula sa mga kahina-hinala at hindi matukoy na manufacturer.

Agad na pinagbigay-alam ni PISI vice president for technical affairs Joel Ronquillo sa DTI ang nadiskubre na ang substandard rebars ay nagmula sa ilang hardware stores sa Central Luzon at nagkasundo na imbestigahan ang unmarked reinforced steel bars.

“Unmarked rebars along with rebars embossed with non-registered logos were also found. These rebars are banned because their manufacturer cannot be identified, traced and sanctioned,” ani Ronald Magsajo, PISI president.

Nauna nang dumaan sa pagsusuri ng Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) ang mga bakal na gamit ng Real Steel, Metrodragon Steel at Phi­lippine Koktai Metal noong nakalipas na Hunyo kung undersized ang rebars na ibinebenta nito sa Central Luzon.

Bigo umano ang mga nasabing kumpanya sa itinatakdang standard ng Philippine National Standard (PNS) para sa rebar na maaaring magdulot ng panganib sa mga gagamit nito para sa construction.

“Some manufacturers and traders are taking advantage of quarantine restrictions and taking shortcuts that ultimately will harm the end-user,” diin ni Magsajo.

“Low mass variation, for instance, is like asking someone to pay for 1 kilo of steel and only getting 900g,” dagdag pa nito.
