Extradition treaties sa UK, India at Spain pinagtibay ng Senado

MANILA, Philippines - Pinagtibay kahapon ng Senado ang ratipikasyon ng extradition treaties sa pagitan ng Pilipinas, United Kingdom, India at Spain na nakapaloob sa Senate Resolution No. 535, 536 at 537.

Bagaman at palaging absent sa sesyon, personal na nagtungo kahapon sa Senado si Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, chairperson ng Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs Committee para isulong ang mga nabanggit na resolusyon.

Ayon kay Santiago, ang mga extradition treaties ang ikinokonsidera pa ring pinaka-epektibong me­kanismo para mapabalik sa bansa ang isang international fugitive o takas sa batas na kriminal na nagtatago sa ibang bansa.

“Extradition treaties are considered to be the most effective mechanism in obtaining the return of international fugitives in order for them to face the consequences of their criminal actions,” pahayag ni Santiago.

Labing-pitong senador ang bumoto ng pabor sa mga resolusyon.

Niratipikahan ni Pangulong Aquino ang extradition treaties sa United Kingdom, India at Spain noong Disyembre 6, 2013.

Ayon kay Santiago, ang Pilipinas ay may panukala o pending extradition negotiations sa 12 pang ibang bansa na kinabibilangan ng Austria, Belgium, Brazil, France, Iran, Israel, Jamaica, Peru, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela at Vietnam.
