Ashfall hits areas near Mayon Volcano

MANILA, Philippines — Communities near Mayon Volcano in Albay experienced ashfall yesterday caused by the continuing advance and collapse of the toe of a new lava flow at the Mi-isi Gully, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs said that weak winds prevailing over the volcano would continue to bring light ashfall to communities located on the southern and eastern portions of Mayon.
As of 4:49 p.m. yesterday, around 28 Strombolian activities of varying durations were recorded by state seismologists.
“The height of the grayish plume is indiscernible but was seen drifting southeast,” Phivolcs said.
Mayon has been under Alert Level 3 or “increased tendency toward hazardous eruption” since Jan. 6.
