MANILA, Philippines — To solve the shortage of manpower in the health sector, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is looking to expand its Emergency Response Services or EMS program.

TESDA director general Francisco Benitez said the agency is working with the Department of Health to address the huge demand for emergency care and other health workers.

“The Philippines is doing well in terms of health care. So most of our competent nurses and other health workers have gone abroad,” Benitez said.

“We want to expand the EMS to make our health care capability more robust,” he added.

Last week, 85 doctors, nurses and other health care workers completed the advanced EMS training sponsored by TESDA.

The program was implemented in collaboration with R.A. Fernando School of Healthcare and Technology.

“This is the first program registered under TESDA for EMS,” Benitez said.

He said TESDA supported the program since there is a need to ensure that there are more Filipinos with skills for emergency response.
