MANILA, Philippines — Eight companies have expressed interest in the 15-year power supply agreement (PSA) for Manila Electric Co.’s (Meralco) 600 megawatts (MW) of baseload supply.

Meralco told The STAR that the eight interested power suppliers have offered a total contract capacity of 1,870 MW.

The names of the bidders will be revealed at the pre-bid conference on July 4, the Pangilinan-led power distributor noted.

Last June 12, Meralco opened the competitive selection process (CSP) for the PSA, which is targeted to start on Aug. 26, 2025.

The company earlier said the conduct of the CSP is intended to meet the company’s power requirements to ensure uninterruptible electricity services to customers.

This followed the issuance of a certificate of conformity by the Department of Energy to Meralco’s latest DOE-approved power supply procurement plan for the terms of reference (TOR) of the CSP.

The TOR, pursuant to the agency’s advisory dated Oct. 11, 2023, strongly encourages power suppliers with natural gas-fired power plants to join the bidding and prioritize the use of indigenous natural gas.

The bid submission deadline is on Aug. 2.

Just last week, Meralco launched the bidding for 400 MW of mid-merit PSA for 15 years, starting Aug. 26, 2025.
