A breakthrough in coffee technology

- Antonio G. Papa -
INDANG, Cavite – The Cavite State University (CvSU), the leading research, development and extension center for coffee in the Philippines, has developed the Aguinaldo Blend, a premium coffee that is blended from the Cavite barako (excelsa and liberica), robusta and arabica coffee beans.

Dr. Alejandro C. Mojica Sr., CvSU research director and concurrently team leader of the Philippine Research, Development and Extension Network on Coffee under the Bureau of Agricultural Research of the Department of Agriculture, headed a group of CvSU researchers that validated and packaged the Aguinaldo Blend. He said "the four varieties of coffee were blended to suit the Filipino taste of brewed coffee."

With just the right balance of the flavor and character of the four coffee varieties, various groups of clientele of CvSU and those who have tasted the blend are unanimous in saying that "the product is comparable with the current blends available in the market and coffee shops."

Considered as a breakthrough on ground coffee production technology, the Aguinaldo Blend has been commercialized, being mass produced by the CvSU Research Center, and exclusively distributed by the Coffee Town Marketing.

The product was introduced last June 12, 2003 at the Republic of Cavite Restaurant in Trece Martires City which coincided with the celebration of Philippine Independence and in conjunction with the province-wide Trade Fair sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry in Cavite.

Likewise, the product was highlighted during the Kapihan sa Kapitolyo sponsored by the provincial government of Cavite and the Cavite Coffee Development Board last June 24, 2003.

The revival of the coffee industry in Cavite and in the Philippines is within reach through the CvSU Research Center, the Cavite Coffee Development Board and the Coffee Town Marketing.

The brewed coffee drinking public is likewise urged to do their share in this noble task of giving hope to thousands of coffee farmers by patronizing the Aguinaldo Blend. Interested parties may contact (046) 415-1355, +63917-503-3260 or email: [email protected].
