London calling

London preppy meets Milanese craftsmanship in Gucci Resort 2025.

Did you know that the teenage Guccio Gucci once worked in the Savoy hotel in London as a porter back in 1899, inspiring him to found a leather goods and luggage retail company that changed fashion as we know it?

Years later, Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno is so inspired by London’s openness (“I owe a lot to this city, it has welcomed and listened to me,” he said in the release) that he not only brought the resort show to the Tate Modern, he had Brit it-girls like Alexa Chung front and center as mixed-wash denim jeans with martingale-belted caban coats and double breasted jackets in matte brown suede came down the runway, complete with pussy bow blouses that are so Chung in the 2010s.

Chung is definitely a muse. All her footwear consisted of flats. Quintessentially Chung ballerinas get their horse-bits and gridded rubber soles. Brothel creepers, styled with socks, come with branded metal segs.

Workwear continues to be given the occasionwear treatment as popovers come in crisp poplin, and jeans swish with a feathered halo of threaded hanging beads. The checks on coats and dresses are in fact hand-applied hanging beads and studs. Jeans are covered in degrade beaded embroidery of chamomile flowers, blooming throughout the collection, from a full suit to a sheer organza set.

Back to the leather goods: the Blondie bag is the season’s revival. Debbie Harry herself was at the show as the models came down with its larger, slouchier proportions to Blondie hit Heart of Glass.
