Tight finish in Bacolod jungolf
BACOLOD, Philippines — Mhark Fernando III turned back local favorite Eddie Gonzales Jr. to capture the ICTSI Bacolod Junior PGT Championship in a chaotic, down-to-the-wire finish at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club yesterday.
In the battle for the girls’ 15-18 crown, Lois Lane Go staged a breathtaking, seven-stroke comeback to nip fellow Cebuana Tashanah Balangauan by one, sealing a thrilling victory with a cold-blooded, last-hole birdie to card a 70 and a 54-hole total of 155.
In the boys’ final, Fernando held a seemingly comfortable three-stroke cushion entering the last 18 holes. But he lost his touch early on the backside as Gonzales momentarily seized the lead with a clutch birdie on No. 12.
The drama peaked at the par-3 No. 18. Gonzales, needing a birdie to force a playoff, hit a poor bunker shot. But he chipped in brilliantly from the fringe to salvage par and a 71, finishing at 155.
