CEBU, Philippines — A grandmother and her six-year-old grandchild were brutally hacked to death, while three others sustained injuries in a violent attack that occurred early Monday morning, March 31, 2025, in Purok Lumboy, Barangay Panangban, Compostela.

The fatalities were identified as Evelyn Pareja Jayme, a 68-year-old widow, and her grandson, Gael Jayme Cogay, 6. Three other members of the family—Ruvelyn Jayme Gomez, 38; her husband, Kelly Gomez; and their 16-year-old son, Clint Justine Jayme Gomez—were also wounded in the assault.

Authorities named the suspect as Jayson Meca Avila, a 41-year-old construction worker and a resident of the same area.

According to Police Captain Lino Tryss Galvan, chief of the Compostela Municipal Police Station, the incident was reported at their station at around 4:00 a.m., two hours after the attack, which took place at approximately 2:00 a.m.

Initial investigations revealed that Jayme was the mother-in-law of the suspect. A sharp bolo, believed to have been the weapon used in the attack, was recovered at the scene.

Avila allegedly attacked the Jayme household first before targeting the Gomez family. One of the victims managed to retaliate using a hammer before the suspect was subdued and later brought to the hospital.

Authorities are looking into a possible personal dispute as the motive behind the attack, though further details are still being gathered to determine the exact cause.

While Avila does not have a prior criminal record with the Compostela police, background checks indicate a history of heavy drinking and frequent intoxication.

“Among gipalawman if involved ba’g illegal drugs,” said Galvan, indicating that investigators are also probing a possible link to illegal drug use.

Charges of murder and frustrated murder are being prepared for filing against the suspect. — (FREEMAN)
