CEBU, Philippines — Brothers Ehman and Ehdrienne Janson Suarez from the municipality of Sibonga in southern Cebu walked down different paths in their athletic journey.

One is into shooting hoops, while the other is on the opposite court spiking volleyballs.

With their God-given talents they nurtured with passion and determination, the Suarez siblings became student-athletes of their respective schools in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI).

Ehdrienne formed part of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars that reigned supreme in CESAFI men’s volleyball event last year, while Ehman made it to the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers basketball squad in 2022.

Now, the Suarezes are set to embark on a new challenge wearing a different set of uniforms in the forthcoming CESAFI Season 24 set to kick off on September 21 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Ehdrienne gears up for a fresh start as he joins forces with the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Spiking Wildcats.

“I will work extra harder to contribute something for my team and represent CIT-U to the best of my ability,” Ehdrienne said.

Ehman, on the other hand, will now be seeing action with the USJ-R Jaguars.

The 24-year-old shooting guard suited up for the UV Lancers that emerged as champions of CESAFI Season 22 two years ago.

Last year, Ehman opted not to play to focus on his on-the-job training. His sacrifice paid off as he eventually graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from UV last July.

But basketball runs in his blood, prompting Ehman to return on the hardcourt and enjoy his final playing year in Cebu’s premiere inter-school athletic league, albeit in Jaguars’ jersey this time.

“I would give my all for my new team,” said Ehman Suarez, who made history as the first cager from Sibonga to win the season Most Valuable Player award in the Gullas Cup way back in 2019. “I am a bit pressured considering that it’s my  comeback season and then also my last, but I will do my best to make it special and memorable.” — (FREEMAN)
