The Latest: Palestinian teen killed, new stabbing in Israel

Associated Press

JERUSALEM — The latest developments in ongoing violence between Palestinians and Israelis (all times local):

7:15 p.m.

A Palestinian hospital director says a 13-year-old Palestinian has been killed during a clash with Israeli forces in the West Bank, while Israeli police are reporting a new stabbing in northern Israeli.

Ramallah Government Hospital director Ahmed Bitawi says Ahmad Sharaka was shot dead by three live bullets to the head, neck and chest. The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Police say two Israelis were stabbed near the city of Hadera, and medics say one is in serious condition. Police say the assailant is apparently Arab and has been detained.

In recent weeks there has been a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks as well as clashes in the West Bank and along the Gaza border.

Israel's Shin Bet security agency says an explosive device set off by a Palestinian woman in the West Bank that wounded police officer and the attacker was a gas canister, not a bomb.

The 31-year-old woman set off the explosion in her vehicle, critically wounding herself and lightly wounding the officer.

It was the first use of an explosive device in the current round of violence, which has mostly consisted of stabbing and shooting attacks against Israelis in Jerusalem, the West Bank and elsewhere.

The Shin Bet says a police officer motioned for the woman to stop after noticing her trailing a police car. When the officer spoke to her, she said "God is greatest" before exploding the gas canister.

The security agency says handwritten letters were found on her person that praised Palestinian "martyrs." It says the woman is a resident of east Jerusalem but lives part of the time in the West Bank.

Israel's prime minister says he is holding consultations to promote sanctions against the Islamic Movement in Israel.

Benjamin Netanyahu says yesterday that the movement is a part of the "systematic, untrue incitement" against Israel that has sparked recent violence. Israel says the group, which runs education and religious services for Israeli Arabs, has incited violence by spreading lies about Israel's supposed intentions regarding a sensitive Jerusalem holy site which is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

At his weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu singled out an Arab lawmaker, Hanin Zoabi, who the premier said called on hundreds of thousands of worshippers to ascend to the site to prevent an "Israeli plot of bloodletting of east Jerusalem residents."

Netanyahu says that amounts to clear incitement to violence and has asked the attorney general to open a criminal investigation against Zoabi.

Israeli police say a Palestinian woman has set off a small explosive in her vehicle in the West Bank, lightly wounding a police officer and critically wounding herself.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says the police officer noticed the woman driving suspiciously yesterday morning and motioned her to stop. She then chanted "God in great" and detonated the explosive.

The attack marks the first use of explosives in the current round of violence that has mostly been confined to stabbing and shooting attacks against Israelis in Jerusalem, the West Bank and elsewhere.

Palestinians carried out two stabbing attacks in Jerusalem on Saturday before being shot dead by police, while another two Palestinians were killed near the border fence with the Gaza Strip, as a weeklong bout of violence showed no signs of slowing.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says a pregnant woman and her 2-year-old daughter have been killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Kidra identified the mother as 30-year-old Noor Hassan. He said four others were wounded, included Hassan's husband and son, in the strike in the southern Gaza strip.

The Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas weapons manufacturing facilities in response to earlier rocket fire toward Israel.

The Gaza border has been largely calm since the monthlong Summer 2014 war between Israel and the Islamic militant group Hamas, which rules the coastal territory.

But after a week of violence across Israel and the West Bank, protests spread to Gaza as well in recent days. Nine Palestinians have been killed in clashes with Israeli forces along the border area.
