Citing security, CIA calling back some employees

The Philippine Star

WASHINGTON (AP) — The CIA says it's bringing back some employees amid the partial government shutdown out of concern for national security.

In a statement issued Tuesday, CIA Director John Brennan said those being recalled were necessary to the CIA's core missions of foreign intelligence collection, analysis, covert action and counterintelligence.

Brennan didn't say just how many CIA workers were off the job, calling it a significant portion of the agency's workforce.

Brennan said keeping CIA staffing at the dramatically reduced levels of the past week would pose a threat to the safety of human life and the protection of property.

In the statement, Brennan said agency managers were determining exactly who would be recalled under revised staffing plans.
