Jordan calls for continued Palestinian-Israeli peace talks

AMMAN (Xinhua) - Jordan stressed on Saturday the need of continuing peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis leading to the creation of an independent Palestinian state, state- run Petra news agency reported.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh met with U.S. special envoy for the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, Martin Indyk, in Jordan's capital of Amman on Saturday, during which they discussed latest developments and underlined the significance of continued efforts to attain peace.

The Jordanian minister said the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state would bring about security and stability to the entire region.

The U.S. official voiced appreciation of Jordan's continued efforts to support peacemaking and to realize stability in the Middle East region.

Indyk said the United States is keen to continue coordination with Jordan, which is directly involved in the negotiations on the final status issues.

Palestinian and Israeli negotiators will hold their third round of talks this week in the West Bank city of Jericho, a Palestinian official said last week. The two sides started the second round of negotiations in Jerusalem last week.
