Taiwanese stage protests vs Phl fisherman slay

Taiwanese fisherman Hung Shih-cheng's boat, the Kuang Ta Hsing No. 28, is checked by Taiwanese officers after arriving at Liuqiu port in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, Saturday, May 11, 2013. Taiwan said that the Philippine Coast Guard opened fire Thursday on the 65-year-old fisherman in waters claimed by both governments. The Philippines acknowledged the Taiwanese claim, but said its personnel were acting in self-defense. The shooting death of Kuang by the Philippine coast guard became the latest incident to roil tensions over territorial disputes in and around the South China Sea, with Taipei calling Friday for Manila to apologize for the shooting. TAIPEI, Taiwan — Some 200 Taiwanese have shouted angry slogans outside the Philippines representative office in Taipei to protest last week's killing of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippines coast guard in disputed waters.

Monday's demonstration comes one day before the end of an ultimatum imposed by Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou for the Philippines to apologize for the incident and provide compensation to the dead man's family.

If the Philippines refuses, Ma says he will order Taiwanese representatives in Manila back to Taipei and deny Filipinos permission to work in Taiwan.

The Philippines coast guard has admitted it fired the shots that killed the Taiwanese fisherman in the Bashi Strait, between Taiwan and the northern Philippines, but said it acted in self-defense because the Taiwanese vessel was about to ram it.
