Sumatran tiger may be euthanized at Indonesia zoo

SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) â€” An official says an emaciated 15-year-old female Sumatran tiger is in critical condition at Indonesia's largest zoo, following the death of another rare tiger earlier this month at the problem-plagued facility.

Melani was born at the Surabaya Zoo and has been suffering from a digestive disorder for five years. Her weight has dropped below 60 kilograms (132 pounds) from 75 to 110 kilograms (165 to 242 pounds).

Zoo caretaker Tony Sumampouw said Wednesday euthanasia now appears to be the best option.

Melani is one of 10 Sumatran tigers, the world's most critically endangered tiger subspecies, at the zoo in Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java. A 13-year-old male tiger died two weeks ago.

Last year, a giraffe died there with a beach ball-sized wad of plastic in its belly.
