Signal No. 4 up as 'Uwan' batters Northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) maintained its strength Monday morning as it moved west-northwestward over the West Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau said, with storm signals raised across much of Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

PAGASA's 8 a.m. bulletin reports that the typhoon packed maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, gusts of up to 230 kph, and a central pressure of 955 hPa. It was last spotted 125 kilometers west-northwest of Bacnotan, La Union, moving west-northwest at 20 kph.

Strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 780 kilometers from the center, PAGASA added.

PAGASA

Uwan is expected to maintain its west-northwestward path in the next 12 hours before turning northward and re-intensifying Tuesday. By Wednesday, it will begin veering northeast toward the Taiwan Strait and may weaken before making landfall over western Taiwan by Thursday, Nov. 13.

PAGASA warned that heavy rain, severe winds, and storm surges may occur even far from the typhoon’s center, urging residents to heed local evacuation advisories.

“Significant to severe impacts from typhoon-force winds are possible within any of the areas under Signal No. 4,” PAGASA said.
