Unmasking the vow of the Morions

- Verns Joven and CJ Caloracan -

BOAC, Marinduque – A former Morion who became a mask maker shared the tedious task of creating the Roman Centurion mask used during Moriones. Like the week-long custom, the time and effort that he devotes in creating each piece is already a “panata” that he religiously endures yearly.

According to the Morions, wearing the mask as an act of contrition while remembering the passion of Christ, is a small sacrifice in exchange of an answered petition, the absolution of sins or the given grace througout the year. Keeping these values alive and deeply inculcated in every Morion is important in remaining true to their sacred vow and to the heritage of Moriones.
