Business leaders hail MICECON 2027 win as vote of confidence

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu’s business leaders have welcomed the province’s selection to host MICECON 2027, describing the return of the country’s premier meetings and conventions event as a significant vote of confidence in Cebu’s tourism industry and its wider business economy.

For the private sector, the victory is about more than hosting another major conference. Business leaders see it as an opportunity to showcase Cebu’s capacity to handle large-scale events, attract more visitors and create new commercial opportunities for companies across the province.

“Cebu’s winning bid to host MICECON 2027 is a great win for all of us,” said Regan King, president of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“More than just a victory for our tourism and MICE industry, it shows what we can accomplish when government, business, and our tourism stakeholders work together toward a common goal,” King said.

His comments underline the growing importance of public-private cooperation in strengthening Cebu’s competitiveness as meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination.

The business community sees the event as a potential stimulus for activity across the hospitality, transport, food, retail and services sectors. More importantly, it could give Cebu a platform to compete for a larger share of future domestic and international conventions.

Cleofe Albiso, president of the Cebu MICE Alliance, described the return of MICECON to Cebu after more than a decade as both a milestone and an endorsement of the industry’s progress.

“Bringing MICECON back to Cebu after more than a decade is both a milestone and a strong validation of our industry’s enduring strength and growth,” Albiso said.

The successful bid also reflects a concerted effort by Cebu’s business and tourism organizations to build a more coordinated MICE sector.

The Cebu MICE Alliance has brought together industry stakeholders to promote the province as a competitive destination for business events.

For local business leaders, that coordination is increasingly important as destinations across Asia compete aggressively for conventions and corporate gatherings.

Barbara Gothong-Tan, president of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the hosting of MICECON 2027 could provide an important boost to Cebu’s tourism and business sectors.

The conference is expected to generate demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation and other services, while bringing business executives and industry professionals into Cebu.

But the larger opportunity, business leaders argue, lies in what comes next.

MICE events can expose delegates and organizers to Cebu’s investment environment, creating opportunities that extend beyond tourism.

A successful conference could strengthen the province’s reputation among companies looking for locations for future meetings, incentives and corporate activities.

Cebu has several advantages in pursuing that market, including its international connectivity, established hospitality industry and growing inventory of convention and events facilities, Gothong-Tan added.

The MICECON win gives the private sector an opportunity to put those advantages on display.

For King, the message is ultimately one of collective action.

“MICECON 2027 is not just about hosting an event,” he said. “It is an opportunity to showcase Cebu, strengthen our MICE industry, and create more opportunities for our business community.”

That makes the 2027 conference an important test of Cebu’s ability to translate a high-profile event into longer-term economic gains.

“When Cebu works together, Cebu wins,” King said.

For the province’s business community, the task now is to make sure that win continues long after MICECON delegates leave.
