MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Makati yesterday donated P1 million in cash to the local government of Davao de Oro, which was affected by a weather disturbance earlier this year.

Mayor Abby Binay personally handed over the check to Davao de Oro treasurer Grace Quintana at the city hall.

“We know they need all the help they can get to recover from the damage caused by the weather disturbance,” Binay said in a statement.

“Through this financial support, we hope to alleviate the burden of our fellow local government unit (LGU) in recovery and rehabilitation,” she added.

Binay said the Makati government is also willing to accommodate LGUs that want to engage in knowledge exchange and benchmarking activities.

“We are ready to share our sound practices in various aspects of governance, including disaster risk reduction and management, to help other localities become more climate-resilient,” the mayor said.

Aside from Davao de Oro, three other disaster-stricken municipalities in Mindanao, which were affected by weather disturbances late last year, will also receive financial assistance from Makati.

Binay said the municipalities of Kapalong in Davao del Norte and Caraga in Davao Oriental are set to receive P500,000 each.

The municipality of Lupon in Davao Oriental will get P250,000.

Makati has donated P168 million in financial assistance to 283 cities, municipalities and provinces since 2016.
