BIR-8 misses 2014 tax goal

Lalaine Jimenea - The Freeman

ORMOC CITY, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue-Region 8 office, during a regional symposium with businessmen, professionals and other stakeholders in the region on Tuesday, reported that it fell short of its 2014 collection target by P380-million.

BIR-8 director Diosdado Mendoza, however, said the 2014 revenue amounting to P5.8 billion was still higher than its P 5.01-billion collection in 2013.

Mendoza attributed the shortfall to the effects of super typhoon Yolanda that hit Leyte and Samar on the last quarter of 2013, when the bureau also fell P1-billion short of its P6.05-billion target then.

"The years 2013 and 2014 were the very difficult years for BIR-8 to hit the target. In 2013, we only have 10 months to collect and, last year, the business sector was still on the process of recovering losses," Mendoza said. (FREEMAN)
