For illegal animal slaughter Ex-brgy chief, 13 others nabbed

Marchel P. Espina - The Freeman

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A former village chief and his 13 workers were apprehended for allegedly engaging in illegal slaughtering of food animals at Purok Maanyag 2, Barangay Alijis, this city, November 1.

The raid, conducted by elements of the Regional Intelligence Unit of the Police Regional Office-6, yielded the arrest of former Barangay 35 Chairman Marianito Yelo and his 13 workers after they were allegedly caught in the act of slaughtering pigs inside Yelo’s compound.

Police also confiscated 17 pork carcasses, 60 live hogs, 11 colonial knives, 3 knives, steel hook, 18 packs of hogs’ blood, and 11 sacks of hogs’ internal organs, all of which were turned over to the City Legal Enforcement Unit.

The RIU conducted the raid by virtue of the search warrant issued by Bacolod City Regional Trial Court-Branch 51 Judge Anita Guanzon-Chua, dated October 31.

Mayor Monico Puentevella said he wanted the incident investigated, as he vehemently denied the accusations of Councilor Carl Lopez, who claimed that the illegal operation was with the approval of the mayor.

Lopez, for his part, said, “we have to enforce the law regardless of who the person (behind the illegal act) is.” The councilor claimed that Yelo has no business permit and has been operating for some time already.
