OMB, police seize P28M pirated DVDs

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Members of the Optical Media Board and the Iloilo City Police Office confiscated a total of 44 sacks of pirated DVDs, worth P28 million, during simultaneous raids in the City Proper of Iloilo City.

Senior Superintendent Ruperto Floro, City Police chief, said the raiding teams seized more than 200 sacks of pirated discs in the operation, which started at around 3:40 p.m. and ended 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The pirated DVDs were sold at a number of stalls in 11 establishments located along the streets of Valeria, Solis and Delgado, he said.

Floro said sellers of pirated DVDs earlier thrived because police could not just arrest them without any deputization order from the OMB, as required by Republic Act 9239 or the Optical Media Act of 2003.  (FREEMAN)
