Ormoc youth group wins national tilt

Edgar Allan Vilbar - The Freeman

ORMOC CITY, Philippines—  A group of  youngsters of this city won the top prize during the 11th edition of the national competition of youth projects conducted by the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations Foundation, Inc.

The Ormoc group, known as the Hayag Youth Organization that was established in 1985 with 181 members from 10 barangays in the city, was declared the national winner for its entry: Langoy sa Kaluwasan, a project of youth activities that included a swimming camp, disaster preparedness seminar, first aid lessons and open water safety training.

For its feat, Hayag Youth received a specialized trophy, sculpted by Toym De Leon Imao, and P50,000 cash to be used as fund for the group’s ongoing or new project.

Mayor Edward Codilla, who met with some members of the Hayag Youth that paid a courtesy call in his office after receiving the awards, told The Freeman: “After typhoon Yolanda hit Ormoc, individuals and organizations tried to help one another. The Hayag Youth Organization is no exception. Yes, it is an active group since its existence.”

In the past competitions, Hayag Youth was a national finalist in the 9th TAYO for its entry, World Saver: Youth Empowerment Through Environmental Volunteerism and Sustainability. Again in the 10th TAYO, the group barged into the national finals with its Trash to Class Fashion Drive project entry. —(FREEMAN)
