Battered wife hacks drunken husband dead

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A mother of ten allegedly killed her drunken husband after enduring years of beatings from the latter.

The 53-year-old woman, said it was not her intension to kill her husband, 63-year-old Angelito Bayog, following another violent confrontation Wednesday evening while at their farm house at Brgy. Iwa Ilaya in Pototan town of Iloilo.

She told police investigators that Angelito, who came from a fiesta, went home drunk, as usual, and then confronted her over petty things, which shortly after led him to attack her violently.

At first, Angelito kicked his wife, and this got worse when he took a sugarcane bolo and lunged at her several times but missed. Trembling with fear, Lina ran and got a bolo herself and hacked Angelito on the knee.

A shocked wife stayed from where she was and just cried. It took a while before she asked for help from her daughter who was occupying their house in the same village.

Senior Insp. Aron Palomo, Pototan Police chief, said that while the bolo did not hit a vital organ, Angelito could have died from severe loss of blood.

Palomo said that the incident took place at around 8:45 p.m. but the call for police assistance was placed almost two hours later. “We called for an ambulance and brought the victim to the hospital but he expired,” he added.

It was gathered that the family had no plans of filing charges against the suspect. Palomo also attested that the slain Angelito was tagged in a murder case in the town. (FREEMAN)
