66 private schools in WV granted tuition hike

Montesa Griño-Caoyonan - The Freeman

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The DepEd-6 has approved the request of 66 private schools in Western Visayas to increase their respective tuition fees this school year 2013-2014, according to regional director Dr. Mildred Garay.

Garay said most of the schools requested for a five percent increase up to a maximum hike of 20 percent to fund some of their improvements on facility and raise of teachers’ salary, among others.

The increase asked by these schools was minimal and still beyond the approved increase of DepEd, she said, adding that they were among thousands of private institutions whose applications for tuition hike are currently under review.

“We are still validating their applications if it is within the rules and regulations of our office,” Garay said. With this increase, DepEd is now expecting several students to transfer to other public schools during the opening of classes, she said.

Garay said public schools are welcoming these students and assured them that proper accommodation will be given to them. She said DepEd has hired new teachers to be distributed to 18 school divisions in the region to bring effective teaching for students especially with the implementation of K to 12 program. (FREEMAN)
