Press Freedom Day

"Is justice only for the poor?" Asked Bobit A. in his PhilSTAR column last Tuesday. Sometimes, Bit, I hear the poor not getting justice in this country. Only the rich like us. Hehe.

It says here that 73% of Pinoys are unbanked. Meaning no money in the bank? Oh, well, don't they keep saying poverty among Pinoys is high? So what's there to be banked?

The long awaited expanded Napoles affidavit is finally out. Eighteen senators and 100 congressmen are listed. Someone texted me: "Unsaon man nila pag-imbestigar aning daghang makasasa sa nasud?"

It says here that the Comelec needs P11 billion for the 2016 election. Just for the heck of it, let me ask: How many empty Pinoy stomachs can this amount fill up? But there's no stopping the election. The poor, they can stop eating, but not the election. Ugh!

The House of Representatives has OK'd the bill declaring Nov. 23 as Philippine Press Freedom Day. Let's hope this can erase the tag which the foreign media have been telling the world that we're the second deadliest country in the world for journalists to work in.

The bill is OK. It promotes and upholds press freedom. Ask lang ko: Isn't there press freedom in Phl? God knows there is. That's why many journalists are being killed for exercising this freedom.

I saw and heard a woman crying a river, so to speak, in a teleserye. Nobody in the show attempted to stop her. Here is one mouth, I told myself, that deserves to be taped like what they do to crying babies in a public health center.

OVERHEARD. A Catholic nun volunteer for catechetical instruction in a private elementary school says most of the school children she meets in this school are not used to saying "please" and "thank you." I remember Loy Jurado's observation during a relief distribution activity in a calamity hit area. "Pipila ra sa mga bata ang mo-thank you inig dawat sa relief goods," matud ni Loy. Which validates the nun's observation. Remarked a lay minister: "Angay tudluan og maayong pamatasan ang mga bata sa ilang ginikanan, di na mohuwat sa madre."
