Ramon Duterte St., Cebu City

It is the street starting from the corner of V. Rama Avenue to the corner of Salvador Street in Brgy. Guadalupe (note there are two Salvador streets in Cebu City, Celedonio Salvador Street in Brgy. Guadalupe, the other one, Carlos A. Salvador Street in Brgy. Labangon). The Cebu City Council on motion of all is members enacted City Ordinance No. 719 on August 5, 1971 naming the street in honor of Ramon Duterte.

Ramon was born on Dec. 23, 1901 in Danao, Cebu. He finished his Bachelor of Laws at the Philippine Law School in 1925. He was elected Vice Mayor of Cebu City in 1955, he was the running mate of then Mayor Sergio "Serging" Osmeña Jr. 

He assumed the position of mayor when Serging ran for Congress, this was from Sept. 13, 1957 to Dec. 31, 1959.

He was a Judge of the Court of First Instance (now Regional Trial Court). He was a Law professor in the University of the Visayas and in the University of Southern Philippines, President of the Cebu Lawyers League, President of the Rotary Club of Cebu and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Aside from a street, a school is named after Ramon, it is the "Ramon Duterte National High School" in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

His son, Ronald who was born on Jan. 15, 1934, who also became a lawyer like him, earned a Doctor of Laws Degree at the Unibersidad de Madrid also became Mayor of Cebu City from 1983 to 1986, when he succeeded Mayor Florentino S. Solon who resigned from the position to become the Director of the Nutrition Center of the Philippines. Ronald became President of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation and Dean of the College of Law.

The Dutertes are only one of two families where a father and son served as Cebu City Mayor, the other family is the Osmeñas with Serging Osmeña and Tomas Osmeña.

The ordinance naming the street in honor of Ramon Duterte was approved on Aug. 11, 1971 by then Mayor Eulogio E. Borres, the Secretary to the Mayor then was Ribomapil Estrelloso Holganza.
