Aboitiz streets

In Cebu City, there are two streets named after Aboitiz family members. The street formerly known as Elizabeth Pond is now named Ramon Aboitiz Street, while the street used to be called Lopez Jaena Street is now Eduardo Aboitiz Street.

Ramon Aboitiz Street is the street that stretches from Juana Osmena Street parallel to the Redemptorist Monastery. Ramon Aboitiz was a successful businessman, having established, managed and controlled a string of business establishments which contributed greatly to the economy of the country.

He dedicated time for charity, spearheading charitable work and contributing immensely to charitable causes. He was a recipient of numerous papal decorations, among which were the Pro Eclesia et Pro Pontifice, Pontifical Knight of St. Sylvester, and Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.

The City Council, on the motion of Councilor Arturo Abellana, approved City Ordinance No. 893 on August 5, 1974 naming the street as such to perpetuate the memory of a citizen who contributed outstanding service to the community.

The Eduardo Aboitiz Street, meanwhile, is named after Don Eduardo, a noted Cebuano philanthropist who founded the Cebu Boys Center in 1948, the Cebu Boys Town and the Pasil Youth Center, which were geared towards the training of out-of-schoool youths in the city and in the slum areas of Pasil. He also later on founded the Cebu Girls Center, as well as the Friends of the Lepers. Don Eduardo died on December 14, 1985.

City Ordinance No. 1269, on the motion of Councilor Clemente Rama, approved on November 9, 1987, the renaming of Lopez Jaena Street to Eduardo Aboitiz Street.
