Safety of squatters prioritized

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City government will prevent any more construction by informal settlers in an area near the Mananga River in barangay Lagtang, with the aim of protecting lives and property.

Councilor Dennis B. Basillote, who is the chairman of the Committee on Urban Poor and Rural Development, said the council has already talked with the informal settlers.

The Local Housing Board of  the City of Talisay approved last September 19 a resolution that seeks to prohibit the construction of additional structures.

“The occupants have been advised not to construct further structures in the area in as much as the place is not suitable for dwelling as it poses potential risks to their lives,” Basillote said.

Basillote said the informal settlers shall be transferred to a safe place where they could have security of tenure.

But despite warning against the hazards of living near riverbanks, more people continue to construct illegal structures in the area.

Republic Act. No. 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991, mandates that every local government shall exercise powers essential to the promotion of general welfare. â€“ (FREEMAN)
