Hearing masses, noting tide levels: Candidates mark few rituals in filing COCs

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Even in the actual filing of their candidacy, some continuing and come-backing public officials have a few rituals to observe, at least for those running in Cebu’s first district.

In Talisay City, it appears that candidates have agreed on choosing the day on which they file their certificates of candidacy for next year’s elections.

Former congressman Eduardo Gullas, who will run for mayor, informed reporters that his group, Alayon, will submit their COCs on October 13.

Congressman Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas said they will first hear the mass at around 8 a.m. before they will go to office of the Commission on Elections. While his grandfather will file with the Comelec in Talisay, Samsam will submit his COCs before the Comelec office at the Provincial Capitol.

On October 14, the group of Talisay City Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante is expected to file their candidacy.

Villarante hopes to be elected as the next mayor of the city, along with his running mate, City Councilor Danilo Caballero, who will be vying for vice mayor.

Before filing, the Villarante’s camp will attend the fluvial procession of Sta. Teresa de Avila as part of  the celebration of the city’s annual fiesta on October 15.  After, they will also hear the Mass.

Finally on October 15, the group of Mayor Johnny V. De los Reyes will submit their COCs at around 4 p.m.

In the City of Naga, the daughter of Mayor Valdemar Chiong, lawyer Kristine Chiong, will attempt to succeed the seat of his father and will submit her COCs on October 14 at 11 a.m., which she said, is a high tide.

Kristine chose the date and time believing it will usher her good luck. “Nindot na nga adlaw kay taob,” she said.

In Minglanilla town, Mayor Elenito Peña will tender his COC on October 15 at around 9 a.m. but only after his group has also heard the mass.— Gabriel C. Bonjoc of BANAT News (FREEMAN)
