Firm loses permit after deadly fireworks show

CEBU, Philippines - A fireworks manufacturer in Purok Judas Belt, Barangay Babag, Lapu-Lapu City has been stripped of its business permit Friday following the death of an 8-year-old boy during a fireworks display.

Juliet Wahing is no longer allowed to operate her business after the victim, Sam Monteron, died with wounds on his belly when the fireworks, identified as "bombshell," rocketed on the ground instead of going upwards. The incident happened during the fiesta celebration in Purok 3, Barangay San Miguel, Cordova town.

Wahing's business permit was issued to her last January 14 this year.

During investigation, the police found out, however, that Wahing was not also able to renew her manufacturer's license with the Firearms and Explosives Office, according to Senior Police Officer Glen Facturan of the Police Regional Office-7.

"After investigation, it was discovered that you failed to renew your license from the Civil Security Group of the Philippine National Police," the revocation order said.

Even if  Wahing was able to present a renewed business permit, Facturan said the manufacturer's license from the police is still required in conducting a fireworks display.

Last Monday, the bombshell reportedly fell off before exploding in Monteron's direction. The victim sustained wounds on his belly and was declared dead on arrival at the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital.

The operators of the fireworks display, identified as Jason Tuquib, 31, and Joseph Berdin, 28, both residents of  Barangay Babag and workers of  Wahing, have been detained at the Cordova Police Station.

However, Senior Inspector Alexander Nuñez of Cordova police said the victim's family will not file a case against them , aware that  it was only an accident.

The victim's family agreed to settle it out with Wahing's camp, he added.

According to the revocation order issued by the Office of the Mayor, the business involving firecrackers and pyrotechnics is considered as "high risk."  Radaza said this is the reason why the city is strict when it comes to required documents and procedures. (FREEMAN)
