TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines  — Two provinces and five towns in Eastern Visayas earned the 2014 Seal of Good Local Governance of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

DILG-8 Director Pedro Noval Jr., said the SGLG awardees in Region 8 were the provinces of Biliran and Northern Samar, and the towns of Barugo, Carigara and Jaro in Leyte; Limasawa in Sourthern Leyte and Gandara in Samar.

Miles Colasito, DILG-8 information officer, said the seven winning LGUs passed all three SGLG Core Indicators: disaster preparedness, social protection and good financial housekeeping; plus at least one of the Essential Indicators (business friendliness and competitiveness, peace and order and/or environment).

Noval also said the LGUs in the region could improve more on social protection, particularly on compliance with the Accessibility Law for persons with disabilities.

Awarding of the SGLG will be held in ceremonies this September, when each winning LGU will be conferred with an SGLG Marker to be installed in a conspicuous area of the Municipal Hall.

Further, SGLG recipients will be granted with the DILG Performance Challenge Fund, at P7 million for each province and P3 million each municipality, which they will use for their respective development projects.  (FREEMAN)
