In surprise inspections Talisay, Carcar jails yield no drugs, guns ‘Operation Greyhound’ staged after Bilibid controversy

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes and Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura led a separate surprise "Operations Greyhound" in their respective detention facilities yesterday morning.

Both mayors were happy to learn that the operations were "very positive and successful" as no prohibited drugs and even weapons were recovered within the detention facilities.

The greyhound operation came in light of the National Bureau of Investigation's recent raid of the New Bilibid Prison where they recovered contraband items, including illegal drugs, and luxury items owned by convicted drug lords.

Apura lauded Jail Warden Roger Daligdig for passing the surprise inspection.

Daligdig attributed the result of the operation to strict security measures that they are being implemented at the detention center.

Carcar City Jail has a total of 148 inmates occupying five cells.

The jail facility in Talisay City, on the other hand, holds a total of 269 inmates occupying seven cottages.

Although Talisay City Police Office Chief Reycel Carmelo Dayon said it is possible that contraband items may have been sneaked into the jail, he sees that the management of the facility has been strict with security, especially when frisking visitors and checking their bags.

Dayon said the higher Bureau of Jail Management and Penology headquarters warned jailers against conspiring with drug lords and other inmates because if they will be found tolerating illegal activities in detention facilities, they will be slapped with administrative and criminal charges.

Dayon confirmed that there were no illegal drugs retrieved from the inmates or inside the detention cell, adding that "this shows the facility is still a drug-free facility."

If an inmate is found possessing illegal drugs, a case for violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, will be filed against him in court.
