CEBU, Philippines – Lapu-Lapu City Police Office director, Senior Superintendent Armando Radoc, said yesterday that the family of slain Police Officer 1 Romel Gilig will receive financial assistance from the Philippine National Police.

"We are certain nga ang benefit nga i-provide will be enough to support his family," Radoc disclosed but said he did not know how much will be given to Gilig's family.

The Philippine flag was flown at half-mast during yesterday's burial of Gilig, who was also given a 21-gun salute.

"We will be also working sa investigation ani niya for other benefits sa PNP and Napolcom ang iyahang benefits," Radoc said.

The police were able to get an affidavit from a witness, Mark Lomongsod, Gilig's mechanic, who was able to identify the suspect.

Gilig was killed on the spot after he was allegedly shot in the neck by a certain Virgilio Franco around 9 p.m. on December 3 while fixing his motorcycle in front of his motor shop in Sitio Kabaloy, Barangay Pajac.

Police have filed a complaint for illegal possession of firearms against Franco while Gilig's wife had filed a murder case against him. – /LPM
