Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A movement campaigning for the security of employment among job orders, casual and contractual employees was launched in Cebu, despite the typhoon Ruby that hits the Visayas regions.

Overseas Filipino Workers Family Party-list Rep. Roy Seneres led the launching here which was also attended by Cebu leaders who believe on the purpose of Rose Movement.

Rose means Respect Our Security of Employment headed by Seneres. Seneres is a former Amabassador detailed in different missions.

Former Cebu Customs Collector David “Boy” Odilao Jr., former Customs Mactan Collector Paul Alcazaren, Dr. Edilberto Alvarado, convenor of the Volunteers for Environment in Cebu were among those who attended the simple launching rites.

Seneres said with the launching of Rose Movement in Cebu, they aim to unite the country’s 50 million labor force and Small and Medium Entrepreneurs  as leverage for employers to respect the rule of labor law and social justice.

According to Seneres, the situation of the 50 million labor force and SMEs is not good.

He cited the 10 million OFWs who are in places far from their families.

He also said records show that 12 million Filipinos are jobless while 18 million Filipinos are underemployed.

Another 5 million, according to Seneres, were contractual mostly working at the different establishments like department stores and malls.

On the other hand, one million Filipinos were casuals or job orders working in government offices.

He also said that millions of farmers and fishermen in the country need immediate attention by the national government.

Millions of SMEs were abused shopping mall owners who collect high rentals of small spaces.

Odilao, who also led the BISDAK group in Cebu said their group supports the Rose Movement because they believe on its principles.

Odilao said casual, contractual and job order employees need security of tenure for their jobs.

Aside from Cebu, Rose Movement is also expected to be spread in other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao areas. – JRS
