Talisay to donate cut trees to DepEd

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The Talisay City government has found a noble way to dispose the 10 dead Gmelina trees in front of the City Hall that were cut down recently.

The FREEMAN learned the wood will be donated to the Department of Education for the construction of chairs and tables and also to the barangays for use in their projects.

Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes said the cutting complied with the required permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

De los Reyes, who supervised the cutting of trees last Wednesday afternoon, said there was no objection to the cutting and uprooting of the old trees.

He added that the city is aware of the mounting objections from various quarters on the cutting of century-old trees along the national highways of the City of Naga, San Fernando and Carcar City.

The mayor also said the City Council approved and recommended for the cutting of the dead Gmelina trees.

Councilor Antonio Bacaltos, chairman of the committee on environmental protection, gave an assurance that the trees that were cut will be reinstated.

He pointed out that the dead Gemelina trees will be replaced with fruit-bearing trees that will provide better landscape and a shade near the City Hall.

Bacaltos said they needed to cut the trees because they already posed danger to the personnel working near the area, like those till the vegetable gardens for the city's Green Valley program. (FREEMAN)
