CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City's Solid Waste and Management Office is intensifying its information campaign on proper garbage disposal among barangays and public elementary and high schools.
But in order to completely address garbage disposal problems, especially during the rainy season, the campaign needs sustainability, said SWMO head Engineer Ricardo Mendoza.
According to Mendoza, the city government, through the barangay captains and officials, imposed the practice of garbage segregation up to the sitio level.
Residents of different barangays have also been asked to practice proper disposal of garbage.
Some barangays in Mandaue City are also said to be practicing composting where they make money from garbage turned into organic fertilizers.
Erne Manatad, president of the Association of Barangay Councils in Mandaue City, said all barangay captains and officials are aware of the existing city ordinance related to garbage disposal.
Mayor Jonas Cortes said that the residents in Mandaue should do their share for the success of the city's clean and green program at the barangay level.
Canduman barangay captain Leo Jabas said the people should be educated on proper disposal of garbage and claimed he is imposing this in his barangay. — (FREEMAN)
