Cop shoots man on rampage

CEBU, Philippines - A 32-year-old man who ran amok was shot yesterday dawn by a responding police officer who was fresh from his night sleep.

Josefino Contemplado, a hollow block maker and a native of Tabuelan town in Cebu, landed at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center after he sustained gunshot wounds on the lower portion of his body.

Inspector Delfin Bontuyan of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-7 was asleep when his neighbors asked for help and told him Contemplado went amok.

Initial investigation revealed that prior to the incident, Contemplado allegedly stoned houses around the area, including the house of Ben Tudtud. Tudtud is City Councilor Alvin Arcilla's father-in-law.

Bontuyan said his neighbor Emmanuel Rabor woke him up because their jalousie window was hit by a stone believed to be caused by Contemplado's rampage.

Bontuyan immediately responded and acted upon the information he got and went to the area where Contemplado was last seen.

Bontuyan went to a dark area and allegedly introduced himself as a police officer and politely asked the suspect to give himself in.

But the suspect allegedly shouted at him and said he was not afraid of anyone.

Few minutes later, Contemplado fired a shot towards Bontuyan behind a perimeter fence.

Bontuyan fired back at him hitting the lower right portion of the body.

Bontuyan said that something was "wrong" with Contemplado because when he asked the suspect why he went on amok, the man could not reportedly talk straight.

"Mura man og naay deperensiya kay pagduol nako niya ingon man nga di ko mahadlok kay gipatay nako tanan nakong mga iguson (I'm not afraid. I killed all my brothers)," Bontuyan said.

Judel Orlanes, Contemplado's employer, told Bontuyan that he seemed to be depressed and was not in his usual frame of mind.

He said he was sad because his girlfriend's family could not accept him.
