Lapu coop center to educate members

CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City Cooperative and Livelihood Resource Center will assist the Cooperative Development Authority to educate members of different cooperatives following reports that some of these cooperatives may face cancellation.

Jimmy Glomar, head of  Lapu-Lapu City Cooperative and Livelihood Resource Center, said the city government continues its support to the different cooperatives in the different barangays.

Glomar cited the success of a women's group which is now the partner of the city government in providing foods during birthdays of senior citizens and important occasions in the city.

Glomar admitted the need to continue educating their members to help their respective cooperatives.

"Matag miyembro sa usa ka kooperatiba dako kaayo og ikatabang aron molig-on pag-ayo ang ilang grupo," said Glomar.

Earlier, Fe Talaboc of the Cooperative Development Authority said at least 20  of 98 cooperatives in Lapu-Lapu City may face cancellations of permit to operate after they reportedly failed to comply with all necessary requirements set by their office.

Talaboc said these cooperatives failed to comply with requirements even if they have been existing for several years.

According to Talaboc, some of these cooperatives were affected when the companies, where most of the workers were employed, closed or changed management.

She said this happened to some companies inside Mactan Export Zone.

CDA required the members of cooperatives to undergo the continuing seminars and hire private accountants to conduct audit of their yearly operations.

Glomar, on the other hand, said their office is closely coordinating with Cooperative Development Authority to assist these small cooperatives. (FREEMAN)
