Samsam pushes funding for ‘scholars ng bayan’

Brenda Batuto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu First District Representative Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas, Jr. urged the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to set aside funds for the scholars in his district.

Gullas said that the scholars will be called "Scholar ng Bayan" since their scholarship's funds will come from the national government, this after Gullas has no more access to the Priority Development Assistant Fund (PDAF).

He said that he asked the CHED to give funds to the scholars from the cities and municipalities in the first district. The cities under the first district are Talisay, Naga and Carcar while the municipalities include Minglanilla, San Fernando and Sibonga.

According to Gullas, not less than 1,000 students in the first district can benefit from the scholarship.

Aside from education, Gullas also eyes the health of constituents as a priority concern in the first district.

The young congressman also said that since they don't have PDAF anymore, they have stopped giving health cards. However, he said he had sought help from the Department of Health to set aside funds for Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for use of constituents needing medical attention. (FREEMAN)
