CEBU, Philippines -  Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and city officials traveled to the north of Cebu last Thursday morning to hand in the city’s P3.3 million in financial assistance to Bogo City and seven towns that were devastated by typhoon Yolanda last November 8.

The recipients included Bogo City, which received P600,000; Sogod town, P300,000; Borbon, P500,000; Tabogon, P300,000; Medellin, P400,000; Daanbantayan, P550,000; San Remegio, P400,000; and Tabuelan, P500,000.

Borbon Vice Mayor Noel Dotillos, who accepted the donation for Mayor Bernard Sepulveda who is out of the country, said the town will use the money to rehabilitate schools and government structures.

Bogo City Mayor Celestino Martinez Jr. said the amount will be used to build houses that will benefit more than 1,000 residents living along danger zones particularly in the coastal barangays of San Vicente, Sto. Rosario, and La Purisima.

The city government  of Bogo, in coordination with non-governmental organizations, is constructing 60 houses in La Paz, to be named as Yolanda Village, and more than 100 houses in Pulangbato.

Another project in Cayang will be opened next month, Martinez said.

Hans Sy of SM Cares Foundation will arrive Saturday for the groundbreaking of a housing project in Pulangbato where 200 houses are to be built on a 1.1-hectare lot donated by Fernan family.

Although it will cost P200,000 to build each house, the beneficiary will get it for free.

However, each beneficiary-family will have to comply with the sweat-equity rule to avail of a free house.  (FREEMAN)
