CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City government is seeking help from the Capitol for the acquisition of trucks for some barangays that still rely on other barangays for the collection of garbage.
Councilor Valeriano "Val" Ylanan is referring to barangays Pooc, Biasong, Dumlog, Mohon, and Lawaan I.
"There is a need to efficiently collect, transport, and dispose of solid waste within the city and promote an orderly and sanitary condition of surrounding," Ylanan said.
According to Ylanan, the city cannot afford to purchase garbage trucks for the barangays.
Only 15 of the 22 barangays have garbage trucks of their own.
So far, three barangays have been declared pilot areas for "no segregation, no collection" campaign, which started in Sept. 1. These barangays are Pooc, Poblacion, Lawaan III, and Bulacao.
Based on Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001, all households, as well as commercial and business establishments, are required to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes and place them in separate garbage bags, which are collected on a weekly basis. — (FREEMAN)
