Alayon picks bet for ABC election

CEBU, Philippines - Outgoing Association of Barangay Councils in Talisay City President Charles Basillote yesterday confirmed that barangay Jaclupan captain Joel Orbiso will be fielded as Alayon’s candidate for the ABC presidency.

Basillote said Orbiso is the choice of the 17 barangay captains allied with Alayon, which is headed by former first district congressman Eduardo Gullas.

“Joel is the bet of the Alayon,” Basillote, who was ineligible to run for captain in the last election since he is serving his third and last term, told The Freeman.

Gullas earlier said the next ABC president must be someone who is loyal to the party, competent, someone who is on his last term as barangay captain.

The ABC president will automatically become an ex-officio member of the city council.

Under the law, ABC members shall select, by voting, from their ranks their president, vice president, and other officers for a three-year term.

Alayon has five aspirants to choose from as its bet in the ABC presidential election, namely, Joel Orbiso of Jaclupan, Perla Cabanes of Tanke, Raul Cabañero of Bulacao, Delia Ybañez of Lawaan III, and Maning Cabriana of Tabunok.

Orbiso is likely to face barangay Linao captain Fe Ylanan, the wife of Talisay City Councilor Valeriano Ylanan.

“Yes, I will run,” Ylanan said, despite the fact the Alayon group captured an overwhelming majority in the last barangay elections, with 18 out of  22 candidates.  (FREEMAN)
