CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways has assured the motorists that the Maguikay flyover remains safe.
Engineer Roy dela Cruz of the DPWH-7 construction division made the assurance after the Mandaue city council approved last Wednesday a resolution sponsored by Councilor Editha Cabahug asking public works officials to check the structure and implement immediate repairs if needed.
Cabahug expressed concern following reports that a six-wheeler truck hit the bottom of the flyover.
Dela Cruz admitted there were cracks but it is not enough to cause for alarm. He will however recommend a thorough inspection. According to him, motorists should not be alarmed if the flyover shakes because it is normal for bridges to vibrate.
Engr. Danilo Pasicaran, chief of DPWH 7 structural section, said there is a need to review the flyover’s vertical clearance to ensure that trucks passing under the flyover do not damage the bottom surface.
The flyover was constructed in 1992 and it has a life span of 50 years. The DPWH 7 repaired the flyover’s expansion joints early this year.—/FPL (FREEMAN)
