Fire hits house of town mayor

CEBU, Philippines - No one was reported injured in a fire that destroyed on Wednesday a two-story house in sitio Panaghiusa in barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City which belonged to the mayor of San Remigio town, Cebu.

Mayor Mariano Martinez, who owns a construction firm, lived on the second floor of the house while utilizing the ground floor as a stockroom for construction and scrap materials.

Carlos Legaspi, who was in charge of the stockroom, said he noticed a spark in the ceiling while washing himself but disregarded it until it was too late.

Fire investigator SFO3 Roy Garcia said fire fighters acted quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to other houses.

Damage to property was pegged at P200,000. (FREEMAN)
