Talisay seen to lower number of job orders

CEBU, Philippines - The number of job order and contractual employees at the Talisay City Hall is expected to shrink in the coming days.

Mayor Johnny De los Reyes said he is bent on rationalizing the functions of city hall workers by reducing the number of job order employees with the belief that the functions supposedly to be assigned to them can, in fact, be performed by regular employees of the city hall.

“Effective August 1, the mayor will only hire 1,100 or a maximum of 1,200 job order,” according to city information officer Vincie Monterde.

He said reducing the number of JO’s was not an easy decision for the mayor because this saddens him considering that these people are his supporters and have families to feed.

But Monterde said that hiring more than 2,000 job orders will hurt the annual budget.

The city pays these workers from P220 to P300 per day per worker.

It was even rumored the city would bring down the wage to P175 per day to accommodate more workers.

By August, opposition councilors will only be allowed to endorse 40 workers each while councilors identified with the administration will have 75.

The vice mayor endorse 100 workers while the mayor, 500.

Talisay has 10 elected councilors with two others who sit as ex-officio representing the Association of Barangay Councils and the Sangguniang Kabataan.

Of the 10, only three are with the administration.  (FREEMAN)
