DPWH checks Mandaue’s drainage systems

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways is checking the drainage systems in major flood-prone roads in Mandaue City.

Being checked are those at M. Briones Street, sitio Sudlon in barangay Maguikay, Highway Seno, the Cebu Shipyard area, the Subangdaku fly-over, LH Prime, Rolling Hills located along A.S. Fortuna Street in barangay Banilad and the intersection of Plaridel Street going towards barangay Opao.

Florentino Nimor, head of the City Planning and Development Office, said the City Engineering Office is now preparing the Program of Work and Estimates (Powe) for drainage works in the intersection of Plaridel St. going to barangay Opao; on the A.S. Fortuna St., particularly in the LH Prime area; and for the dredging of Tipolo Creek.

Nimor, in an interview, said the city plans to build a new drainage system that will bring the rainwater runoff from Plaridel St. directly to the creek in barangay Opao.

The city needs P25 million for the dredging of the Tipolo creek wherein water would overflow whenever there is a heavy rain.

Nimor said solving the flooding in the LH Prime area will require cooperation of private entities doing business in the area, for the fact that the drainage in the area cuts through privately owned lots.

Nimor said the projects will be undertaken once the Powe is completed by the City Engineering Office.

Nimor said the DPWH will inspect the drainage and analyze the problem. After the inspection, recommendations will be made to the DPWH regional office.  (FREEMAN)
